Puppy Turn-In
It's very hard to imagine that Tivo and
Tash would not be with us forever! But
they will remain in our hearts and spirits
and will always be Our Very First puppies
and so it is with a heavy but happy heart
that we travelled to Orlando to turn in Tivo
and Tash so that they may begin
advanced training. Here are some photos
from that trip
At left: A Trainer prepares to
hand over Tivo for his advanced
training. "Working with the puppies has taught me
about responsibility and patience.
It has helped me to become more
assertive. I have learned that I
deserve to be loved and I have
learned to love unconditionally in
return. I am lovable! The puppies
taught me that!"
At Right: A Trainer bids Tash a
heartfelt farewell. "Being with the puppies has
helped me heal my inner child. It
has helped me to build trust with
my training partners and to trust
myself with this precious puppies'
life."
It takes a whole lot
of dedicated people to get a program like
this off the ground! Puppies Tivo and Tash in
their graduating caps and gowns!
L-R Above is one of the original inmate trainers who has completed her
sentence and is now working for the Animal Rescue League. Michelle Rivera is the
program coordinator and co-founder of the Pawsibilities Unleashed program. (in green) is a previous inmate trainer who is now working for Village Animal
Clinic.  Lt. Jeffrey Jackson is the supervisor of the Palm Beach
County Stockade Drug Farm, Carey Haughwout is the Public Defender for the 15th
Judicial Circuit. This program was her heart wish and she set it all in motion because
her mother was blind and had a wonderful seeing-eye dog, Burr, who was raised in a
federal penitentiary.  Tivo and Tash in foreground.
Says inmate/trainer : "The puppies have
taught me about patience and
compassion, understanding and a
sense of adventure. Watching them
grow here behind bars, everything is
an adventure to them. They are
always so excited. In the drug world,
everyone is excited to see you
coming because you have
something they want. With the dogs,
you don't need drugs to get them
excited to see you coming, they
love to see you coming regardless.
And it's not because they want
something from you, it's because
they have something to give."
We thank all of our partners including Village Animal
Clinic and especially Dr. Berkenblit, Animals 101, Inc.,
The Office of the Public Defender for the 15th Judicial
Circuit, The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, and
Canine Companions for Independence. We also thank
all of our weekend puppy socializers who are kind
enough to bring the puppies home on the weekends so
that they can become accustomed to things they cannot
encounter in a penal institution such as kids, cats, stairs,
pools and outings to the store, the beach and the mall.
Thanks for peeking in! Look in on us again and often!!!
