| Zoonotic Diseases Goals and Objectives: Pet health, disease control, immunization. The student will be able to recognize why it is important to have their dog immunized; identify what shots are needed and why, identify some of the symptoms of specific diseases (subjects: Science/Math) Activity Description: Students will be shown a power point presentation that illustrates the various medical conditions that can affect our pets and how to avoid them. Students are shown objects from a “yuck box” that contain jars of worms, stones and parasites as well as a bufo toad which is deadly to dogs. A handout includes a list of all the diseases that may affect pets and how a pet owner should react. The pet emergency number is given out to all students. ___________________________________________________________ Choosing The Right Pet Goals and Objectives: To show how some dogs are better suited to some households then others, to identify certain dog breeds and where they came from. Students will be able to list why some dogs may be good for some families but not for others. (Social studies/geography) Activity Description: Students will be shown a video that covers all the basics of bringing a new pet into the home. A handout is given to all the students with clues as to where different dog breeds originated from. Photos of select dog breeds will be shown and students are asked to guess what part of the world they are from. Other pictures of animals are shown and volunteers read the circumstances for those wanting to adopt a pet and the students are asked to match each pet with the prospective adopter and share why or why not the adopter should get the pet he is given. ___________________________________________________________ CPR and First Aid for your Pet Goals and Objectives: To show how to react in a pet emergency and how to perform CPR on a dog. Students will be able to perform the steps for cardio- pulmonary resuscitation in dogs.(Science/life science/biology) Activity Description: Students will be shown a power point presentation that illustrates the some of the household dangers that pets face. They will then be given a demonstration of the proper way to perform CPR on their dog. Each student will be given a chance to perform CPR on the CPR canine manikin (dogikin) “Ceeper” |
